Lab Testing
Test, Don't Guess: How Functional Medicine and Targeted Nutrition Find What Your Body Is Actually Missing

"Your labs are normal."
If you've heard that while feeling anything but normal, this article is for you. Because two of the seven disciplines I practice as an Integrative Health Practitioner — functional medicine and orthomolecular medicine — exist precisely for the gap between "nothing is technically wrong" and "I feel terrible every day."
Normal Is Not the Same as Optimal
Standard lab panels are designed to catch disease — and their "normal" ranges are wide enough to include a lot of people who feel awful. Functional medicine looks at optimal ranges and, more importantly, looks at far more than a basic panel ever will: gut health and candida overgrowth, vitamin and mineral status, omega-3 to omega-6 ratios and inflammation scores, food sensitivities, stress hormone patterns, heavy metal accumulation.
These are the places root causes hide. And today, every one of them can be tested from your own home.
The Power of Asking "Why" Five Times
Functional medicine's core discipline is refusing to stop at the symptom. Take a real-world pattern I see constantly:
Fatigue → why? → low iron and B12 → why? → poor gut absorption → why? → gut inflammation → why? → a food sensitivity and stress-driven digestion shutdown → why? → a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight for years.
Notice where that chain ends: nowhere near where it started. Treat the fatigue with caffeine and you've done nothing. Treat the iron with a supplement and you've helped a little, temporarily. Fix the gut and the nervous system, and the entire chain heals upward.
The Right Molecules in the Right Amounts
Once testing shows what's actually off, orthomolecular medicine supplies the correction: restoring the body's own molecules — vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids — to optimal levels. Food first, targeted supplementation second.
Why are deficiencies so common even among people who "eat well"? Decades of industrial farming have depleted soil minerals, so produce carries less nutrition than it did generations ago. Chronic stress burns through magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin C. And a stressed, inflamed gut absorbs a fraction of what you swallow. You're not what you eat — you're what you absorb.
But hear me on this: orthomolecular medicine is not the influencer supplement stack. Twenty random pills from a "must-have" list is guessing — expensive guessing. Testing tells us exactly what YOUR body needs, in what amounts, and — just as valuable — what it doesn't.
What Test-Don't-Guess Looks Like in Practice
In my practice, this is where every health journey starts. At-home labs — gut, minerals and metals, inflammation, vitamins — arrive at your door. No clinic visits. When the results come in, we review them together, and I translate the data into a personalized protocol that draws on all seven healing disciplines: targeted nutrients, foundational lifestyle rebuilds, nervous system regulation, daily rhythm, digestive support.
Data instead of guesswork. A map instead of a maze.
You can't fix what you haven't measured. If you're ready to see what's really going on inside your body, book a call — let's get to work.
